A community of learning

"Bloom is like a world where we work together and care about each other while we learn new things." --Joanna, age 6, Bloom student

Bloom Community School began with a vision for building a new kind of school in Bloomington-Normal - one that would welcome families excited about a small community of learning supporting excellent teachers dedicated to innovative, research-based educational practices. Bloom is focused on creating a K-8 student-centered, community-connected environment in which children are supported in developing healthy lifelong learning habits through project-based learning and social-emotional growth as part of a 21st-century skills framework.

Bloom's pilot academic year began in August 2017 and has developed into an innovative learning program. Experienced, creative, award-winning teachers lead each class, and outside of pandemic conditions, the school operates as a community of learning, with co-teaching and collaborative projects as well as school celebrations with all ages. Mixed-age classrooms create an environment in which teachers honor individual learning needs. For more details about our academic approach, click ABOUT BLOOM .

MISSION STATEMENT

Bloom’s mission is to cultivate joyful, independent learners in an educational environment that nurtures individual development by integrating high academic standards and community engagement. We encourage students to develop a deeper understanding of themselves and their ability to contribute to collaborative problem solving that positively impacts their community and the world.

SCHOOL PHILOSOPHY
CHILDREN ARE NATURAL LEARNERS:

Our school honors and nurtures students’ natural curiosity and innate desire to learn, fostering internal motivation and the passion for discovery.

EDUCATION SHOULD ENHANCE INDIVIDUALITY, NOT DEMAND CONFORMITY:

Education should respond to the unique developmental trajectory of all students and focus on their holistic social, emotional, intellectual, cognitive, cultural, and physical development.

LEARNING HAPPENS BEST THROUGH INTEGRATED AND MEANINGFUL EXPERIENCES:

Children learn best through hands-on opportunities that weave relevant skills and content throughout interdisciplinary projects and provide them with hands-on and authentic learning opportunities.

EDUCATION SHOULD EMPOWER STUDENTS TO IMPROVE THEIR COMMUNITIES AND WORLD:

Effective educational experiences amplify students’ voices, agency, conscience, and intellect to create a more equitable, just, and sustainable world.
